The first benefit of taking lessons on a school horse with a good instructor.
A good school horse will do as they are asked and listen to their rider. With this you will be able to concentrate on what your instructor is asking of you and the basics of learning to ride.
You can concentrate on your balance and position. You can focus on keeping your hands soft, your heels down and secure and looking forward without worrying too much on what your horse is doing.
This also allows you to relax more, for your instructor to concentrate on you and you don’t have to worry about bad habits forming from a resistant horse.

Whether you are 5 or 50 when you make the decision to start taking lessons it is important to visit and find a high quality equestrian centre that meets a certain criteria. Look for a facility that has good, friendly instructors that will listen to your needs and what you want to achieve and are certified through recognized organizations like British Horse Society or the American Riding Instructors Association which means they are trained and qualified to a high level. A good instructor will take a genuine interest in your progress and what you want to achieve whether it be just learning how to look after and take care of a horse for everyday trail riding or through to top level competition.
I used to compete in show jumping, basic dressage and eventing and decided it was time to restart riding as horses have always been part of my life. I am lucky enough to share my time between 2 trainers and even though they are qualified to the same level, have the same amount of experience both and know what my goals are they train me in very different ways, exercises and methods. This is great as every lesson is different and I am relearning and being taught multiple things at the same time. One trainer concentrates on ground work while the other concentrates on jumping.
