When you first start your riding lessons you don’t need to invest a large amount of money into it until you are sure it is something that you want to continue with. The most important area that you will need to spend money on is on your riding clothes.

With horse riding safety comes first. A boot with a heel is an absolute must. The heel will help prevent your foot from slipping through the the stirrup iron. This is important as if you fall of your horse you risk being dragged along the ground and serious injury.

The next important and necessary accessory is a riding helmet. Only buy a well fitting, SEI Certified helmet which means that it meets all the required safety measurements. Another feature to look for is a helmet that you can adjust so that it fits correctly and doesn’t slip or is too tight.

As far as comfort goes you should invest in a pair of breeches or jodphurs as they are also known. They come in a variety of styles and colors. They dont have inside seams like jeans and are stretchy so they have a lot of give and they don’t rub and create sore areas. They also have soft knee patches which help you grip. If you are taking regular lessons you will soon become uncomfortable in jeans.

If you live in a cold or humid area you may want to invest in a pair of riding gloves to help you grip the reins.
